KWM artcenter is pleased to present Chen Ying’s first Beijing solo exhibition from 8.28 to 10.19 2019. The exhibition presents 8 new oil paintings. Chen Ying’s most recent work further investigates his interest in abstraction offering an array of aesthetic possibilities for the audience.
The crash of figures, abstract scenes shaped through overlap and transformation, the blurring of lines between concrete and abstraction, along with the uniqueness of his aesthetics, left a deep impression on the audience when Chen Ying hosted his solo exhibition “Reality & Regeneration” in MadeIn Gallery in 2017. In the subsequent two years, Chen has continued to explore the relationship between figures, styles, perspectives, colours and materials.
Throughout the exhibited works, as well as diversion of perspectives and transference of vision, certain relationships which derive from, catalyse, entangle and are designed amid figurative construction, lines, materials and colours, are formed. Canvases are imbued with various shapes and lines, as a result of which, the structure and strength of his working process comes into being. The constant shifting of perspectives, combined with the clash, deformation, extrusion and deviation due to geometric figure’s correlative induction and counteraction, delivers an elasticity and fluidity to the painting.
Diverse figures, styles, perspectives, colours and materials drawn by Chen Ying are partly designed, partly by accident. Shape, colour, dynamic relationships and structure interplay and evolve, organically and by chance, bringing about an energetic playfulness. At the same time, the artist mingles daily emotion and aesthetics into the works, without limitations and through deliberate implication, presenting abundant changes and movement composed through duplication, different frameworks, visual tussles and conflicts.
About the Artist
Chen Ying (b.1982, China), currently lives and works in Beijing. He was born in 1982 in Qiqihar, Heilongjiang Province in China and majored in Scenography graduating from the Central Academy of Drama in 2010. Chen Ying’s paintings show his fascination for and exploration of abstraction, symbolised in iconic geometric forms, from the abstract scenery of shape reinvention, growing and receding into vision, to the gradual intensification in the relationship of forms, decoration and images. The artist integrates his daily life with aesthetics and amusement intentionally without limitation. He depicts more unfamiliar shapes specifically, presenting them in ample and subtle spaces. The works move between reality and imagination, meditation and incident and result in a complex viewing experience opening up the possibility for further abstract exploration.
His exhibitions include: “Extreme Mix” 2019 Guangzhou Airport Biennale, Guangzhou, 2019; “Traceable” MadeIn Gallery, Condo Shanghai, MadeIn Gallery, Shanghai, 2018; “Reality & Regeneration” solo exhibition, MadeIn Gallery, Shanghai, 2017; “Form Consumption Over Substance Reflection”, MadeIn Gallery, Shanghai, 2017; “Visibility of Power”, J GALLERY, Shanghai, China, 2017.
